Loft insulation

13886312_mInsulating your loft, attic or flat roof is a simple way of reducing heating bills and stopping heat escaping through your roof.

Why insulate?

Around 25% of heat lost in un-insulated homes is lost through the roof. Loft insulation is a relatively low cost option, is generally effective for around 40 years and will pay for itself several times over in this period. Loft insulation also helps to reduce your heating bill, saving you between £45 and £150* every year; it will also reduce your carbon emissions and keep heat out of your house in the summer months. Installation is usually quick and easy, taking around 1-2 hours.

Is my home suitable?

As long as your home has a loft space which is not boarded it will be suitable, although the type of roof you have may affect your options. It is important to note that if you use your loft for storage, if you installed the recommended level of loft insulation, you will no longer be able to do this as putting items on insulation weighs it down and reduces effectiveness. Similarly you will be unable to lay boards onto the joists (although there are ways around this).

How much could I save?

Loft insulation could cut your heating costs by up to 25%. The actual monetary and carbon dioxide savings may vary depending on a number of factors such as how much insulation you already have, how hot your have your house in the winter, which fuel you use and how long you have your heating on for, but you could be looking at around £175 per year.

Even if your loft is already insulated our Green Deal Assessor will have checked that you have the recommended depth in order to maximise savings.

Insulation options

There are options available for your loft insulation but they do vary dependent on your home. Pitched (sloping) roofs have more options available while flat or dormer roofs have more limited options. Our assessor will have looked at every option during the Green Deal Assessment made on your home and the recommendations will be based on what is most suitable for your property.

When insulating your loft, our installer will do the entire process in one visit including (where necessary) ensuring appropriate ventilation to prevent a build-up of condensation, insulating the loft hatch and protecting the pipes to prevent them freezing. The entire installation process will generally take no more than half a day and all we require from you is to ensure that your loft has been cleared.
